Kiwi offers enigmantic flavor

The furry, brown, egg-shaped kiwi fruit is not as unfamiliar toconsumers as it used to be. But the appearance of the kiwi fruit isvery misleading, for inside is an exquisite emerald green-coloredflesh that captivates the curious.

Originating in central China, the fruit was introduced in 1906to New Zealand, where it was commercially cultivated. For years thisfruit was marketed as the Chinese gooseberry, but in 1974 it wasrenamed after the kiwi, a bird native to New Zealand.

In the 1960s, kiwi fruit vineyards were established inCalifornia. Due to opposite growing seasons in California and NewZealand, this fruit now is available year-round.

Nashville, Charlotte, and Lexington Firms Launch Attorney Marketing Venture LegalHub.com.

Nashville, TN (PRWEB) July 25, 2011

Amid fueling speculation in the online legal services industry, LegalHub.com, aimed at becoming a key player in the lawyer search market as well as the attorney marketing and lawyer advertising market, is set to launch its beta program on Monday, August 1st. The project has been a 9 month collaborative effort between Robert B. Trussell, Jr., former CEO of Tempur-Pedic International, Shane Messer, a managing partner at The Incubator Group (a Nashville business development collective), and AdDaddy Networks (a national leader in legal marketing and lead generation for attorneys).

Messer, LegalHub's front man and platform architect, has stated that the project has been under wraps for about 9 months due to privacy concerns regarding trademark and patent registration issues. Extensive time was needed for the complexity in creating such a unique platform. "There have been nearly a dozen programmers working on this project since late last year, and we've had to work through two complete rewrites based on one, evolving feedback from early-stage user interface testers, and two, complex social/algorithmic issues." Messer brought in his Nashville website design firm, Made To Order Websites, to assist in the initial core programming of the patented algorithms used in the site. He has also assembled a separate team of long-term programmers expected to take control of the site after the initial beta launch.

Messer, who has won numerous awards from organizations ranging from BusinessTN to the United Nations, has predicted a grim future for attorneys unwilling to embrace online attorney lead generation. "I'd say that within 10 years, 75% of an attorney's non-referral prospects will come from either Internet PPC marketing, Internet organic traffic flow from social media and search, geo-targeted impressions via mobile devices, and/or impression advertising, such as billboards, that consumers see along the roads they drive to and from work each day. The Yellow Pages, TV, and radio are going to die. People's nose's are pointed at Facebook, Google, and their iPad/iPhone during a serious amount of their waking hours. Our goal is to ease the impact on attorneys and help transition them so that their practice's marketing funnel remains full of qualified prospects."

Other members of the team include Raychle Searfoss, a noted SEO guru who, along with LegalHub's Marketing Director (and CEO of the lawyer marketing powerhouse, AdDaddy Networks), Barrett Sharpe, helped propel nearly 800 legal web sites into existence for clients of Lawyer Search, LLC (backed by RBT Investments) within 24 months. The dynamic duo have built a platform generating thousands of dollars in leads each day for hundreds of attorneys around the United States. "During beta, we won't be releasing all the features just yet, but instead will be really looking at our online footprints, as well as the impact of our pages in search and PPC. Like our other properties, we have to monitor daily the effect we are having not only on the lawyer search market as a whole, but also the indexation patterns that are so critical in this industry, which is dominated by Google, Facebook, and LinkedIn. Not to mention the impacts caused by their updates, such as the recent Panda algorithm shift," states Searfoss.

In fact, it was the success of LawyerSearch.com which drove the then-CEO Barrett Sharpe to contact Messer and inquire about building the LegalHub algorithm into an online platform, a place where lead generation could occur naturally between attorney and consumer. "We originally started out with Lawyer Search contracting one of my firm's daughter companies to assist in the build out," says Messer. "I was a bit skeptical at first because of his [Sharpe's] foray into online dating and the issues he faced in that space. However, as he and Raychle started working together more, I realized that somehow he'd managed to really become what I'd consider an oracle of knowledge in this legal space. The guy's talent in lead generation is so good that it's scary; my main question was whether he could translate that talent to the acquisition of attorneys en masse. We talked about me coming on as a partner to manage the development of the platform, so I got an extra office in downtown Charlotte so the Nashville business development team could be closer to the project. Everything just rapidly evolved from there. Needless to say, it was a good decision."

College of American Pathologists Puts Medical Reminders in the Hands of Americans Through MyHealthTestReminder.org.(Disease/Disorder overview)

NORTHFIELD, Ill., June 28, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- More and more people use mobile devices to manage their daily lives. In fact, according to the Pew Research Center's Internet and American Life Project, 65 percent of Americans even sleep with their cell phones-many using the modern day necessity as alarm clocks.

Today, the College of American Pathologists, the world's largest association of board-certified pathologists, announced a new service available on its website, MyHealthTestReminder.org. Taking less than one minute, visitors to the site can sign up to receive a free text message reminding them to schedule important health screening tests to the devices they use most-their cell phones.

"MyHealthTestReminder.org serves as a 'medical alarm clock' for individuals, prompting them to schedule health screening tests that are essential to their health and well-being," said Stephen N. Bauer, M.D., FCAP, president of the College of American Pathologists. "Putting off or avoiding screening tests such as a colonoscopy or Pap test can delay treatment options for patients, or in some instances, lead to death."

Pathologists are doctors and diagnostic experts who examine cells, tissues, and body fluids to diagnosis diseases, such as cancer and heart disease. They are essential members of the patient care team and serve as interpreters of medical laboratory tests to help guide a patient's treatment and care.

In the ever-changing world of health care reform, individuals can take charge of their health by scheduling important health screening tests to enhance and/or prolong their life, as well as head off the expense of hefty health care costs down the road to treat a disease in its advanced stage.

Scheduling a reminder is easy and convenient. It's as simple as 1-2-3:

1. Register at MyHealthTestReminder.org

2. Select the type of reminder and day that you would like to be reminded

3. Receive your reminder through a text message to your cell phone and/or with an email

Visitors to MyHealthTestReminder.org can schedule reminders for a mammogram; Pap test; cholesterol test; and colon cancer, prostate cancer, and diabetes screenings tests, as well as make a blood donation. MyHealthTestReminder.org is available in English and Spanish.

While the use of cell phones continues to increase, receiving health screening tests unfortunately has not. The common excuses are centered on being too busy, fearful, or embarrassed. A recent study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention revealed that more than half of all Americans over the age of 50 who should have received colon cancer screening tests have not.

"As a physician who specializes in pathology, I know that screening tests save lives. In fact, with early detection and treatment of colon cancer, 5-year survival rates can be as high as 90 percent," said Dr. Bauer. "We are hoping that through MyHealthTestReminder.org more lives can be saved."

Visitors to MyHealthTestReminder.org can also access the CAP's website, MyBiopsy.org. The site was developed by pathologists to provide individuals who have been diagnosed with cancer and their loved ones accurate and credible information to help them better understand their diagnoses. Currently, the site houses information on more than 40 of the most common cancers and cancer-related conditions.

The College of American Pathologists is a medical society serving nearly 18,000 physician members and the laboratory community throughout the world. It is the world's largest association composed exclusively of board-certified pathologists and is widely considered the leader in laboratory quality assurance. The College is an advocate for high-quality and cost-effective patient care.

SO MUCH FOR DIGITAL DEMOCRACY: NEW STUDY FINDS ELITE VIEWPOINTS DOMINATE ONLINE CONTENT.

BERKELEY, Calif. -- The following information was released by the University of California - Berkeley:

By Yasmin Anwar, Media Relations

Anyone with Internet access can generate online content and influence public opinion, according to popular belief. But a new study from the University of California, Berkeley, suggests that the social Web is becoming more of a playground for the affluent than a digital democracy.

Despite the proliferation of social media - with Twitter and Facebook touted as playing pivotal roles in such pro-democracy movements as the Arab Spring - the bulk of today's blogs, websites and video-sharing sites represent the perspectives of college-educated, Web 2.0-savvy users, the study says.

"Having Internet access is not enough. Even among people online, those who are digital producers are much more likely to have higher incomes and educational levels," said Jen Schradie, a doctoral candidate in sociology at UC Berkeley and author of the study published in the May online issue of Poetics, a Journal of Empirical Research on Culture, the Media and the Arts.

Schradie, a researcher at the campus's Berkeley Center for New Media, analyzed data from more than 41,000 American adults surveyed between 2000 and 2008 in the Pew Internet and American Life Project. She found that college graduates are 1.5 times more likely to be bloggers than are high school graduates; twice as likely to post photos and videos and three times more likely to post an online rating or comment.

Overall, the study found, less than 10 percent of the U.S. population is participating in most online production activities, and having a college degree is a greater predictor of who will generate publicly available online content than being young and white.

The results suggest that the digital divide for social media users is wider between the haves and have-nots than it is between young and old, and underscore growing concerns that the poor and working classes lack the resources to participate fully in civic life, much of which is now online. That chasm is unlikely to break down until everyone has a host of digital production tools at both home and work, Schradie said.

"Conventional wisdom tells us that the Internet is leveling the playing field and broadening the diversity of voices being heard," Schradie said. "But my findings show the Internet is actually reinforcing the socio-economic divisions that already exist, and may even heighten them, which has all sorts of implications as more of civic and economic life moves online."

Since the early 1990s, the Internet has been billed as the greatest agent of change since the Industrial Revolution. With the 2004 launch of Facebook and the 2008 creation of the microblogging site Twitter, user-generated content has exploded with an estimated 2 billion social media users worldwide.

Previous data gleaned from the annual Pew Internet and American Life Project have shown that Americans in higher-income brackets are more likely to have broadband access and mobile devices and thus use the Internet more often.

Chart shows differences between high school graduates (darker bars) and college graduates when it comes to producing online content

However, Schradie's latest study breaks new ground in that it tracks the relationship between socio-economic status and 10 online activities most likely to influence the public, opinion shapers and policy makers. Among those uses are such social networking activities as Facebook; website building and design; blogging; photo-and video-sharing, such as on YouTube; chat room and newsgroup participation; and the posting of comments and ratings.

In 17 surveys, she tracked the demographics of users, including education level, income, gender, race and ethnicity. Despite users' racial, ethnic and gender differences, all 10 online activities showed a socio-economic class divide.

Many observers of social media assume that participation rates will increase as younger generations, known as "digital natives," embrace new technologies and modes of communication. But by tracking 10 different activities over time, the study shows strong patterns of inequality that are not likely to disappear when the next social media tool appears, Schradie said.

"The working class is underrepresented on the Internet," the study concludes. "Without their voices, their issues are ignored."

CARL BILDT TO ATTEND MEETING ON FUTURE OF ARCTIC IN GREENLAND.

STOCKHOLM, Sweden -- The following information was released by the Government of Sweden:

How should the world respond to climate change in the Arctic? And how should we deal with increased demand for the natural resources hidden below the ice? This week, foreign ministers from the countries surrounding the North Pole are to meet to discuss these and other decisive issues facing the region. The meeting, which takes place on 12 May in the Greenland capital, Nuuk, is part of the work of the Arctic Council, which Sweden is soon to lead.

Minister for Foreign Affairs Carl Bildt arrives in Greenland on Wednesday evening. US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Russian Minister for Foreign Affairs Sergej Lavrov are also expected to attend the meeting. The five Nordic countries, along with the US, Russia, Canada and representatives of indigenous peoples, participate in the Arctic Council. Among the issues on the agenda are the momentous changes in the climate, the life of indigenous peoples, and how joint sea rescue operations can be coordinated.

The climate issue in particular is especially acute in the Arctic, since temperatures have risen twice as fast there compared with the rest of the world. And when the ice melts, larger areas are opened up to exploitation. During the two-year Swedish Chairmanship, which begins when the foreign ministers meeting is rounded up on Thursday, Sweden wants to see a coherent policy for dealing with these issues.

"The Arctic is facing decisive changes at present. A responsible, joint policy for the region is the alpha and omega, and not only for the countries around the North Pole," says Minister for Foreign Affairs Carl Bildt.

On Thursday, the same day as the ministerial meeting, Sweden is to launch the priorities for its Chairmanship as well as a national strategy for the Arctic. The texts will be posted on ud.se/arctic on Thursday morning, just after 09.00.

There will be opportunities for telephone interviews with Carl Bildt and Arctic Ambassador Gustaf Lind in connection with the ministerial meeting. Please contact Press Secretary Anna Charlotta Johansson for more information. A press conference will be held in connection with the meeting in Nuuk when Sweden assumes the Chairmanship, at approximately 17.00 (local time) on Thursday.

Video footage from the press conference, as well as interviews with Carl Bildt and other participating foreign ministers, will be posted on thenewsmarket.com/swedenchannel. If the internet connection in Nuuk allows, this will material be posted on Thursday afternoon and evening (Swedish time).

Dh225,000 for an Anti-Smartphone.

Summary: C*is plain ridiculous if you are asking Kipp.

If you aren't aware, this month, Kippreport is focusing on special mobile technology. While some members of Kipp are too poor to afford one of those savvy smartphones and the pricey data-packages that come with it [give us a raise, boss], it would seem some are too rich to buy a savvy smartphone.

Or that at least is the idea behind the new Easir--a new super expensive phone that can set you as far back as Au37,000 (dhs225,000). So what exactly does this phone do, you ask? Does it have super fast internet? Or the ability to store more data that the chunkiest of hard drives?

No. The Easir does absolutely nothing.

It doesn't connect to the internet, it cannot download apps, it is just a basic phone that can make and receive calls. In fact, the company's CEO called the Easir, 'an anti-smartphone.'

But let Kipp not discredit it too much, the phone actually took three years to design, is apparently made from "watch-grade material by European craftsmen, and everything down to the ring tones have been designed especially for it." While a regular Easir would cost you Au6,400 (dhs39,000), a gold-plated version could cost as much as Au37,000.

Kipp can think of another thing that is dumb and we are not just talking about the phone.
